After expressing his opinions on how women in marriages might be impacted by financial empowerment, former Big Brother Naija star Tochi has sparked a contentious debate.
Tochi implied in his Instagram story that a lot of women remain in their marriages mostly because they are financially dependent.
He asserted that many married women would decide to end their unions if they were granted N100 million to start their own businesses.
His post read:
“If you give 100 married women N100 million each to go establish themselves, in two weeks, 95 will leave their marriage.”

Social media users’ reactions to the message were divided as it swiftly went viral. Some agreed with his point of view, claiming that financial limitations cause many women to remain in bad marriages, but others argued that marriages are held together by more than just money.
A social media user @verapatrick reacted: “I think what he is trying to say is that most married women are treated so bad that if they have financial freedom they would rather be single.”
Another user @edafe_vanvic added: “A lot of meaning to that sentence, it also means many 95 percent of women are in marriages for survival purposes, they are in just to make someone else responsible for their financial lives 😂, add this to other meaning u know . If they finally become financially independent, they will no longer find marriage interesting 🤨, because to them the man would have nothing else to offer them 😂.”
