A youth corps member has gone viral after using her personal NYSC allowance to fund transformative projects for a community school in Ibadan, Oyo State.
In a touching post shared on X (formerly Twitter), the young woman recounted her remarkable journey, detailing how her service year turned into an opportunity to leave a lasting impact. Initially, she planned to fund the construction of a well for the school, but this modest goal evolved into a much larger initiative.
The photos she shared online showcased several completed projects, including a well and a scaffold that doubles as storage and a community resource. She revealed that the school principal, students, and local landlords encouraged her to take on the additional tasks, and their enthusiasm motivated her to expand the scope of her efforts.
Her selflessness came at a personal cost, as some friends criticized her decision to pour a significant portion of her NYSC allowance into the project. Despite the financial challenges she faced afterward, she expressed immense pride in her accomplishments. She wrote, “I did 4 personal projects during my NYSC in Ibadan and received a meritorious award 🙈… but my friends think I was foolish to have wasted so much money. After NYSC, I didn’t have 100k to my name for a while, but I’m pleased I did all I did.”
Her post quickly went viral, sparking widespread admiration and discussions about the importance of selfless service. Several users shared their reactions, celebrating her dedication and sharing similar experiences.
One user, @DaudaAzeez1, commented: “Impressive, I did the same in Baruten, Kwara State, and also won an award. Though I was broke after service, the blessing is massive right now.” Others praised her as a role model, urging her to use her achievements to secure scholarships abroad or boost her CV for international opportunities.
The story has inspired countless others to view the NYSC program as a chance to create meaningful change, even with limited resources.
